Creating a Realistic Training Schedule for the Busy School Year

As the school year kicks into high gear, I know we’re all juggling a million things at once and it’s easy to let our health and fitness slide. We wanted to share some ideas for creating a realistic training schedule that you can stick with.

Embrace the Early Mornings

Mornings are rough. But, getting up before the kids can be a game-changer. That quiet time before the chaos starts is ideal for getting in your training session.

Quick tip: Have your workout clothes ready the night before. There’s nothing worse than stumbling around in the dark looking for your left sneaker.

Schedule It Like a Meeting

Treat your training time as non-negotiable. Put it in your calendar like any other important meeting. You wouldn’t skip a meeting with a client.  So, don’t skip your meeting with your health.

Flexibility is Key

Life happens. Kids get sick, work emergencies pop up, and sometimes you just need a break. Having a flexible routine means you can adapt without guilt. Maybe you can’t make it to the gym, but you can do a quick 15-minute workout at home. Consistency is key and something is always better than nothing.

Lunchtime Escape

Instead of scrolling through social media or dealing with endless emails, try getting in a quick training session. Your mental health will thank you for the break.

Weekend Mornings

Use this time before the chaos starts to catch up on a training session you may have missed during the week.

Tag Team with Your Partner

Balancing a career and a family often means juggling responsibilities with your partner. Sit down together and figure out a schedule that allows both of you to get in your training sessions. It might mean taking turns with morning routines or splitting evening duties, but it’s worth it.

Be Realistic and Kind to Yourself

Let’s be honest—there will be days when training just doesn't happen. Kids get sick, deadlines loom, and sometimes, you just need an extra hour of sleep. The key is consistency, not perfection. Aim for most days rather than every day, and give yourself grace when life happens.

Involve the Kids in Your Routine

Kids’ programs that allow parents to train alongside their children can be a game-changer. It’s a great way to show your kids the importance of staying active and prioritizing your health and wellness.

Remember, creating a training routine that fits into your busy life is all about being realistic, flexible, and kind to yourself!
