Quick Questions for Nick Congdon
Perform24 coach Nick Congdon answers a few questions about his training experience, the reasons he pursued a career in the industry and some of the lessons he’s learned along the way.
-
How long have you been training people?
Nick - I began training a little over 7 years ago when I moved to Tampa. But, I was 15 years old when I began getting involved in coaching and working with sports and athletes along side my dad.
What inspired you to originally pursue a career as a strength coach?
Nick - My father is actually a S&C coach for a high school in Indiana, and as a kid I grew up around the praise and stories of the lives he changed. I knew I wanted to be a positive influence in as many lives as I could. Pairing that with a love for athletics and what the human body is capable of and the Sports Performance field seemed inevitable.
What is one lesson you've learned throughout your experience in the weight room that you could pass on to all the clients you work with?
Nick - Whatever you're doing, do it with intention and purpose. In the weight room or out of it, half efforts yield poor results. Take that "Full Go, No Half Measures" effort into all aspects and I can promise results and growth.
Has one of your clients or athletes accomplished something that you are particularly proud of? Or, have you reached a milestone together?
Nick - It’s easy to look at athletes I've worked with who have had success in their sports. I've been fortunate to work one-on-one with athletes that have won state champions, were collegiate standouts, and reached high level professional levels. But, I'm equally proud of my client who completed a triathlon after dropping 30 lbs or who was finally able to play baseball with his son without pain. We all have different goals to accomplish, and I don't think anyone can or should weigh one individual's successes vs another's.
You train hard yourself. What motivates your own training program?
Nick - The NEED to be better. I have an internal need to prove I'm better than I was yesterday, last month, 5 years ago. For better or worse, I am my own worst critic and that voice in my head will always be louder than any external feedback.
What are my interests outside the weight room?
Nick - When I'm not training I love being outside. From the beach to hiking to local breweries, any adventure with my girlfriend and dog is where I want to be. I also coach high school wrestling for Carrollwood Day (coming off one of the most successful teams in school history!) and am ALWAYS looking for a new ice cream shop to check out!
Do you have any coaches or leaders than influence your coaching/training style?
Nick - In no particular order, I'd have to run with my Dad, Matt Vincent, Jordan Shallow, Josh Bridges, Derek Woodske, Dana Lynn Bailey, Garage Strength, and Mattie Rodgers. They each have their own styles and programs. But, they all bring intensity and top level knowledge.
